An Oreo Cookie Anyone?

Magnolia Plantation was the cream of our day yesterday but on both sides of the regimented march, we had an hour to spend between shuttles and our car pick up. Car pick up? Yes, we decided to spring for a car for the next few days here so we can visit more plantations on OUR schedule and start and end our days at our own (slow) pace (not to mention NOT set our alarm).
So, an hour here and an hour there--the cookie parts of the Oreo. We chose to finish off the Charleston Museum, which happens to be the first and oldest museum in the United States, founded in 1773. Once again, I am reminded of South Carolina's prominence in the Revolutionary War and the formation of our country. When she chose to secede from the Union, she was basing that decision on what she felt were her rights under the Federal system that she helped to found. The people of Charleston suffered greatly during the War Between the States. When Ft. Sumter was fired upon and then taken by Confederate forces, they had no idea of what lay ahead of them. The museum collection survived the war and now is housed in a small portion of this classy place. So many old buildings in the core of the city have been "repurposed", renovated and turned into schools, museums, office buildings, visitor center, etc. but this is a new building. It has a special kids' section; at the end of our amble, we were invaded by a large group of middle school students on a museum-sponsored scavenger hunt. Time to move on!

We picked up our Enterprise car downtown and drove back out to our campground (it takes about 15 or 20 minutes). For dinner we enjoyed some fresh seafood at the Crab Shack just two miles down the road, where we saw a real drawbridge in action and a few dolphins swimming past in the river. It is good to have wheels again until Saturday. We have extended our stay here until Sunday, and then we are going to move up to Huntington Beach by Myrtle Beach where we will camp until we leave for home on Tuesday. Today Ft. Moultrie is on the agenda when we get around to it.
