All night Saturday night we could hear the rain pounding at our camper. Still, we were surprised to get up yesterday morning and discover that we were surrounded by a swamp. Our campsite was under water which made it a little tricky to unplug the electrical connection. We pulled out a little earlier than we had planned and hoped for the best. Water, water everwhere. My first clue of what lay ahead was the drowned car in the parking lot of the bagel shop. Then I noticed a side street flooded with cars stranded in the water. We were over the bridge and on the cross-town highway, heading for the next bridge that would take us north to our campground, when traffic came to a stop. As we inched forward, waiting through multiple light changes, we thought there must be an accident ahead. Finally we arrived at the problem--a lake across the road through which people were going slowly, one at a time. A few people had declined to go across and were pulled over. We took our turn, though, and sloshed to the other side. No one stops this elephant! Our brakes were a little wet, but we continued over the bridge and eventually the rain let up. Later we heard that the cross-town road was closed.
There was the adventure of the day. We stopped for lunch at a pretty little place where we were seriously underdressed but the make-your-own Bloody Mary bar made me feel more comfortable with that. Now we are camped at Huntington Beach State Park, just a boardwalk away from the beach, and today (Monday) the sky is clear, the sun is shining, the bath showers are warm, and life is good. One more beach day ahead. . .
