The Road Home--Day One

Ideally, we start driving by 9:00 in the morning and quit at about 3:00. That was the schedule that we adhered to today to travel from Litchfield, S.C., to Crawfordville, Ga. I was a little late getting up so I missed the sunrise at the beach but took a few photos anyway just to say goodbye to the Atlantic Ocean. We left the low country behind and began to see some rolling hills today. Our destination was A.H. Stephens State Historic Park. We were excited to check out the museum here which is reputed to have an excellent collection of Civil War artifacts. Unfortunately, it is only open on weekends because of "cutbacks." The registration office had some amusing resident ducks who were ever so glad to see us. They waited patiently by the door while we checked in. Who could resist buying the little bags of feed to keep them happy? This campground is almost empty--two campground hosts and two campers. Maybe that has something to do with the cold weather. Now for your history lesson of the day: Who is A.H. Stephens? I didn't know either. He was the Vice President of the Confederacy and the governor of Georgia; this is his home town. His home is restored and is open for tours on a restricted basis. This park has several small lakes, horseback trails, and cabins to rent. It is lovely. We are positively dwarfed by the graceful Eastern White Pine trees that surround us.

Tomorrow we have two large cities to navigate, Atlanta and Birmingham. We are stopping on this side of Atlanta to get the oil changed. Pretty exciting stuff!
